110th & Fuck

2021

Inspired by the uniquely queer energy of the Catherdral of St John The Divine on 110th and Amsterdam in New York City, a fabric sculpture and multi media immersive installation was created to explore how religious imagery shapes us. As gay people we are often excluded from religious paradise, or worse, cast into imaginary pits of eternal hell. If gays folks have no place in religion, then what spiritual experiences do we turn to in moments of crisis? There is a sacredness in the club space and a sacredness in the pop music that has filled those spaces in modern queer history. If church is a place where communities are created and cemented, not only in this life but in the here after, then the club must be the church of the outcast, sinners, and queers. Comparing iconic work of Keith Haring to the imagery of the traditional Roman Catholic Church there is a tension between eternal damnation and self acceptance that works towards the birth of a new religion made up of those on the fringes.
